Our Terminology:
An Asterisk"*" denotes tetraploid
cultivars. These have more chromosomes than the usual
diploid varieties. Neither is better, just different.
Ploidy is not an issue unless you intend to hybridize
Foliage can be dormant, semievergreen, or evergreen.
Realistically, if you live where the winters are harsh,
you'll notice little difference. Foliage is not related
to hardiness, which we guarantee.
Seasons are generally early, mid-season and
late, with some cultivars falling on either side of
these categories. Mid-season here, in northwestern Illinois,
is about the second week of July.
EMO is an early morning opener; CMO is
a cool morning opener (although there don't seem to
be hard and fast rules about what is "early"
and what is "cool")
Nocturnal means that the cultivar opens in late
afternoon; Extended bloom means that the flower
lasts for more than the typical day.
Rebloom occurs when a plant sends up a new set
of scapes. Budbuilders form new buds on existing
scapes
Heritage Plants are those registered on or
before 1970. They are a living history of the work of
legendary hybridizers.
